Primary End-of-Year Expectations: Maths, Reading and Writing

At Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls’ School, end-of-year expectations for Mathematics, Reading and Writing outline the key knowledge, skills and understanding pupils should develop by the end of each primary year group. These expectations support teachers in assessing progress, identifying areas for development, and planning appropriate next steps in learning. They help ensure that pupils build secure foundations, make steady progress, and develop the confidence and independence needed for the next stage of their education.

Overview of end-of-year expectations

  • Mathematics: Pupils develop number fluency, calculation skills, place value, problem-solving, reasoning, and an understanding of measurement, shape, geometry and statistics. Expectations become progressively more challenging as pupils move through the year groups.
  • Reading: Pupils develop accurate, fluent reading and comprehension skills. They learn to understand vocabulary, retrieve information, make inferences, explain characters and events, discuss texts, and support their answers with evidence as they progress.
  • Writing: Pupils develop handwriting, spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence construction and composition. They learn to organise ideas, write for different purposes and audiences, use increasingly varied vocabulary, and edit and improve their work independently.

These expectations are adapted to each year group’s curriculum and pupils’ individual learning needs, using the National Curriculum for England as a reference.
